More Parts Made for 'The Unknown Warrior' as Wheels are Delivered to SDR - October 2011
The LMS-Patriot Project, who are building the new Royal British Legion Endorsed Memorial Engine ‘The Unknown Warrior’, has made significant progress in the last few weeks with the casting of further components for 'The Unknown Warrior' and the completion of the driving wheel machining and non-destructive testing. The six newly machined 6' 9" driving wheels were displayed at the Boro Foundry at the beginning of October with, together with four frame stretchers, the first of six axleboxes, two inside crank webs and the first three of twelve spring hangar brackets. The driving wheels have now been taken to the South Devon Railway, arriving at Buckfastleigh on the 13th October. They will be turned into completed wheelsets with tyres, axles, a crank axle and crank pins all fitted by South Devon Railway Engineering. All the parts that are needed to make the rolling chassis have now been ordered, or have already been made. Steve Blackburn, Engineering and Quality Director for the LMS-Patriot Project said, "We've made significant steps towards to turning 'The Unknown Warrior' into a rolling chassis. We are planning to have the driving wheelsets at Llangollen early next year, with all of the components which will enable the rolling chassis to be completed". |
