The first casting for 'The Unknown Warrior' was produced during June 2010 at the Boro Foundry, at Lye in the West Midlands.
The bogie centre pin (bogie bolster) is the large casting fitted between the frames at the front of the locomotive which supports the front pony truck. Weighing around 3/4 ton, the bogie centre pin is the second largest casting that will be made for 'The Unknown Warrior' - the largest being the middle cylinder.
The photos taken on June 26th 2010 show the casting before and after shotblasting.
The 'leg like' structures on the edges of the casting are where the molten metal was poured into the mold. These were cut off and the whole bogie bolster machined before being taken to the Llangollen Railway Works for fitting between the frames.
