Project Update - March 2013

The LMS-Patriot Project, is pleased to announce that Heritage Painting has been chosen to paint the new ‘Patriot’ 4-6-0 locomotive - 'The Unknown Warrior'.

Heritage Painting, the specialised railway vehicle painting service has already repainted high profile locomotives including ‘Mallard’, ‘Flying Scotsman’, ‘Dwight D. Eisenhower’ and Black 5 number 45407.

A new cab is being built for ‘The Unknown Warrior, which will be fitted to the frames for display at the Warley 2013 Model Railway where the rolling chassis will be exhibited to show the progress of ‘The Unknown Warrior’. The cab sides will be painted in different liveries for the Warley exhibition and a live painting demonstration of cab side lining or numerals is being planned to demonstrate the skills which Heritage Painting have become renowned for since the company was founded in 2011.

Ian Hewitt , owner of Heritage Painting said ,“I am delighted to have been asked by The LMS-Patriot Project to paint ‘The Unknown Warrior’. The new ‘Patriot’ is rapidly taking shape, and the cabs will be the first part of the loco that will have the top coats applied by Heritage Painting. We are proud to be involved with ‘The Unknown Warrior’ and recognize the significance of the locomotive as the new National Memorial Engine”.

The final livery of ‘The Unknown Warrior’ is yet to be decided. Members of the LMS-Patriot Project will be invited to vote the livery after the new ‘Patriot’ 4-6-0 has been completed.

Fundraising for ‘The Unknown Warrior’ is ongoing, with over £500,000 raised so far. A target completion date of 2017 has been set if enough funds can be raised. ‘The Unknown Warrior’ is expected to run on the mainline in 2018 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice which brought about the end of The Great War.
